So last night the Oscars occurred and with it an event that kind of was sad to see in the animation world. Back in November Miyazaki was honored for his life long career in the film industry by the academy. In his acceptance speech he noted he was sad to see the era of hand drawn animation die out. With Last nights win for Disney and Big Hero six we see sort of an iconic mirror of the change of the industry over the past 25+ years as digital has overtaken the art form. While hand drawn animation will still be around, its likely to become a gimmick or artsy tool over being the heart and soul of animation since the drawings of Windsor McCay first moved about on screen over a century ago. Its sort of a sorrowful moment to see the industry so change from one form to the next all in the name of progress, profit and speed. The days of Walt Disney and Miyazaki are past, and we now must move on to find new animation directors and talent to wow a whole new generation.
